What to Bring on a Bruny Island Tour from Hobart

Bruny Island weather is unpredictable and variable most of the year. So you can expect to experience all types of weather in a single day. I visited the island in November and experienced pure blue skies with warm sun, cold brisk wind and a sprinklings of rain. No matter what, come prepared with layers for your day tour to Bruny Island from Hobart.

A good rain jacket and wind breaker will prepare you for the weather Bruny Island will undoubtedly deliver. Bring sunscreen, a ball cap for protecting your head, and good walking shoes for some of Tasmania’s best nature trails. I didn’t personally experience many bugs, but insect repellant is always a good idea on your travels around Tasmania.

For all of you gourmands, if you packed a pair of pants with an elastic waist, this might be the perfect day to donn them to tackle your ever expanding belly on this tour.

I also never leave home without my self-purifying water bottle – it comes on all of my international travels!

Where to Stay in Hobart for Your Tour to Bruny Island

Most Bruny Island tours will pick you up at your Hobart hotel if it’s within a 5km radius of Hobart’s CBD, so I recommend staying either in Hobart CBD, Salamanca / Waterfront area or the historical Battery Point (my favourite!) on your trip to Tasmania. If complimentary hotel pick up isn’t included, choose a hotel that is walkable to the Hobart Harbour docks.

If you happen to be renting a car in Tasmania, then getting to Bruny Island from Hobart will be a treat. Get a start at around 8AM from your Hobart accommodation to make the most of your day trip to Bruny Island from Hobart. Head south about 40 minutes to arrive at the Kettering Terminal for Bruny Island ferries.

A return ticket can be purchased on site and with the Bruny Island ferry cost coming in at $46 AUD for a typical-sized vehicle (including passengers). The crossing will take a scenic 20 minutes. Tasmania Travel Planning Guide

Is it safe to rent a car in Tasmania?

Absolutely, it is safe to rent a car in Tasmania. In fact, renting a car in Tasmania is the best way to see and explore the island.

You can make a very scenic lap of Tasmania in 10 days with your own rental vehicle. Plus public transportation between major tourist hubs in Tasmania is relatively limited.

What is the best way to book my Tasmania accommodation?

I always use booking.com for all of my accommodation worldwide, and Tasmania is no exception. I stayed in some really epic places on my adventure around the island.

For more cozy apartment-style accommodation try VRBO (better and safer than Airbnb).

Can you drink tap water in Tasmania?

Heck yes! Tasmania has some of the cleanest tap water in the world. Outside of a few small rural areas where this might not be the case, I really enjoyed drinking straight from the tap in Tasmania.

If you plan to do a lot of hiking in Tasmania, I recommend bringing my favourite self-filtering water bottle with you, just in case.

What are the best day tours in Tasmania?

Taking a day tour in and around Tasmania is a must when visiting the island.

I highly recommend (and have been on!) the Tasman Island Cruise, the gourmet Bruny Island day tour, the Tamar Valley wine tour and the Gordon River Cruise.
