Renting a car in Cappadocia is the ultimate way to explore this fascinating region of Turkey.

Cappadocia is a land where fairy chimneys rise from the earth like nature’s skyscrapers and hot air balloons paint the sky in a kaleidoscope of colours. There is so much to experience here and that’s precisely why I spend a whopping 10 days in the area

But let’s get real: To truly immerse yourself in this Turkish wonderland, you’ll need more than just a pair of hiking boots. That’s where renting a car in Cappadocia comes into play. Trust me, the freedom to roam through the lunar landscapes and ancient cave dwellings at your own pace is a game-changer.

Should You Rent a Car in Cappadocia?

So, you’ve landed in this magical realm of fairy chimneys and cave hotels, and you’re wondering, “Should I really rent a car in Cappadocia?” The short answer is a resounding yes, and here’s why.

Freedom to Explore Off-the-Beaten-Path Locations

Cappadocia is more than just Göreme and its Open Air Museum. There are plenty of Cappadocia attractions like viewing balloons in Love Valley at sunrise, hiking Pigeon Valley, and sunset at Red Valley. Visiting secluded cave churches and charming villages like Uçhisar and Ortahisar are all made easier and more convenient by rental car.

Renting a car in Cappadocia gives you the freedom to explore these gems at your own pace. No need to stick to a tour group’s schedule or miss out on a perfect sunset spot because the last bus left.

Convenience and Time-Saving

Let’s face it, time is of the essence, especially when you’re trying to soak up as much of Cappadocia’s beauty as possible. Public transport can be limiting and time-consuming.

With a Cappadocia car rental, you control your own timetable. Want to start your day with a sunrise hot air balloon ride and end it exploring the depths of Derinkuyu Underground City?

Totally doable when you’re your own chauffeur.

Public Transport Limitations

Speaking of public transport, it’s not the most reliable in Cappadocia. Buses are infrequent, and some of the most enchanting spots are not even accessible by public transit. Trust me, waiting for a bus in the scorching heat is not how you want to spend your vacation.

So, should you rent a car in Cappadocia? If you’re looking for freedom, convenience, and the chance to craft your own adventure, then yes, a Cappadocia car rental is the way to go.

When Not to Rent a Car in Cappadocia

Renting a Car in Cappadocia FAQ

Is it Safe to Rent a Car in Cappadocia?

Is it safe to drive in Cappadocia, Turkey? You might be surprised to know that driving in Cappadocia is quite pleasant. All major towns are linked by well-marked and paved roads that are in great condition. Especially between Kayseri and Nevsehir Airports and the tourist hub of Goreme.

Some of the more off-the-beaten-path Cappadocia attractions may take you down a dirt road, but while these are less ideal, they are still drivable.

Night driving does come with its quirks. Keep an eye out for livestock that might decide to make an impromptu road appearance, especially in rural areas.

As for the local driving habits, you’ll notice some peculiarities like ignoring non-passing zones and skipping turn signals. But overall, navigating your Cappadocia car rental is both safe and convenient.

What’s the Cheapest Cappadocia Car Rental Company?

I recommend Discover Cars as the best car rental in Cappadocia and the most economical since they compare local, national and international rental companies to get you the cheapest price based on your needs.

Some of the cheapest independent Turkey rental companies, like AutoUnion, Green Motion and addCar, can be found on Discover Cars.

How Much Does Renting a Car in Cappadocia Cost?

The cost to rent a car in Cappadocia depends on how long you are staying. The longer you rent the car, the less expensive the daily rate will be. A one day rental can be upwards of $80-90 USD base price, but if you are staying for 3 days, you are looking at around $40 USD a day.

Remember to add the $7 USD/day full insurance coverage to the daily base rate to get a good estimate on a rental car price in Cappadocia.

Can You Rent a Car in Cappadocia?

In terms of requirements for renting a car in Cappadocia, there are only three things you need to keep in mind:

You Must be 21 to Rent a Car in Cappadocia, Turkey

Visitors crossing the border into Turkey with their own vehicles must be 18 years of age. If renting a vehicle within Turkey and the Cappadocia region, you will need to show that you are 21 years of age or older

You Must Hold a Valid Drivers License

You will not be required to show an international driver’s permit (IDP) if you plan to drive around Turkey and Cappadocia for less than 90 days. If you will be staying for longer than 90 days, you will need a valid IDP.

As a Canadian, I always hold a valid IDP while travelling to make it easier to communicate with traffic officials and rental car companies about my license validity. So, it’s entirely up to you.

You Must Have a Credit Card

Discover Cars and most rental car Cappadocia companies require you to present a credit card when picking up your Cappadocia Turkey car rental. They will process a security deposit on your credit card in case of any incident or damage.

If the car is lost or damaged, you can lose this security deposit, so I would recommend opting to purchase the $7USD full insurance coverage that comes with the rental.

Where Should I Rent a Car in Cappadocia?

Scooping up a Cappadocia car rental should be done early and quickly. Due to the popularity of the Cappadocia region, renting a car in advance is necessary.

The best way to ensure you have a car waiting for you when you arrive in Cappadocia is to book through Discover Cars at either the Nevsehir or Kayseri airport.

Renting a Car in Nevsehir Airport

The Nevsehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV) is the newest and closest airport to the centre of the Cappadocia region. Cheap direct flights are plentiful from major hubs like Istanbul, so reserving your rental car here is the best bet.

The drive from the Nevsehir airport into Goreme (Cappadocia’s tourist hub) takes 40 minutes along well-marked roads.

Renting a Car in Kayseri Airport

Landing at the Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR) is also very common. The rental car process is just as straight-forward as Nevsehir but it will take a little longer to drive into Cappadocia, 1 hour and 15 minutes in good traffic.

Do I Need Cappadocia Car Rental Insurance?

I personally find car insurance really confusing, and I’m sure I’m not the only one, so I’ve broken down what is included in the basic car insurance that comes with your Cappadocia rental car.

Mandatory Insurance for Cappadocia Car Hire

Basic and mandatory car insurance that comes with the rental car consists of three parts:

Third Party Liability Insurance (TPL)

TPL is the mandatory insurance for all cars in Turkey whether they are rented or not.

Theft Protection (TP)

Theft protection is the mandatory insurance for renting a car in Cappadocia, Turkey.

Theft protection is only valid if you comply with the terms of the rental agreement, meaning if your Turkey car rental is broken into and you left the car unlocked, the TP won’t protect you.

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)

CDW is the base collision damage waiver that protects you against damage to your rental car in the case of an accident. This base insurance coverage usually doesn’t include damage to wheels, windows, headlights, key replacements and costs for a tow.

In this case, the costs are covered by the deposit you put down with your credit card at the beginning of your car rental period.

Base CDW also won’t work if you don’t comply with the terms of the rental agreements, like driving drunk, parking in non-parking zones, etc.

Optional Insurance for Renting a Car in Cappadocia (recommended!)

This is the part that most people can’t make a decision about. So, let me explain to you the benefit of purchasing the extended insurance option for your Cappadocia car rental and you can make a more informed decision.

NOTE | Some people will have full coverage already included with their credit cards.

I usually find credit card insurance a little finicky though, with many conditions and requirements for reimbursement.

Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW)

SCDW is extended insurance or full coverage insurance provided at an additional cost through your rental car company.

In the event of an accident, you will be fully reimbursed by Discover Cars or the Cappadocia car rental company you choose.

Do note, that the initial cost of damage will come out of your security deposit, and be reimbursed within 48 hours of you submitting the claim documents required.

Claim documents usually include:

  • The signed rental agreement
  • The rental company’s assessment of the car’s condition (at pick up and drop off)
  • Invoice of the rental car company charging you for damages
  • Bank account details
  • A detailed description of the accident including photos and and video evidence
  • A police report (if applicable)

Make sure to keep these documents on you and in good condition in case of an accident.

How Much is Cappadocia Car Rental Insurance?

In most cases, you can expect to pay $10-20USD a day if you book a rental car in Cappadocia Turkey directly with the rental company.

With Discover Cars, it’s only an additional $7USD a day, which is at least 30% lower than booking directly.

If you book with Discover Cars, full coverage is 30% cheaper than booking directly with the rental car company!

Tips for Driving in Cappadocia

Before you hit the road, there are some things you should know. Here are my top tips for driving in Cappadocia, based on my own 10-day Turkey itinerary.

Road Conditions

First things first, let’s talk about the roads. Cappadocia’s main roads are generally in good condition, especially the ones connecting popular spots like Göreme, Uçhisar, and Avanos.

However, if you’re venturing off to more secluded valleys or cave churches, be prepared for some unpaved and bumpy roads. A mid-range SUV car rental can handle this terrain well.

It is a smart idea to plan out the things to do in Cappadocia that you want to see first, to determine what type of vehicle you will need.

Parking

Finding a parking spot in busy areas like Göreme can be a bit of a challenge, especially during peak tourist season.

Many hotels offer free parking, so it’s worth checking that out when you book your accommodation. Do note, that if you are booking one of the epic Cappadocia view hotels in the centre of Goreme, you may need to walk uphill with your luggage from a central parking lot. The more luxurious Cappadocia hotels will provide a service for this.

Some tourist spots also have designated parking areas, but they can fill up quickly. My advice? Get an early start to snag those prime spots.

Fuel Availability

Gas stations are relatively easy to find in and around the main towns, but they become sparse as you head into more rural areas. Always keep an eye on your fuel gauge and top up when you can. It is better to be safe than sorry, so always keep your tank half full.

Make sure to check what fuel your Cappadocia car rental will need. About 80% of the car hires on offer in the region are run on diesel fuel.

Speed Limits

Speed limits in Cappadocia are generally well-marked, but as a rule of thumb, it’s 50 km/h in towns and up to 90 km/h on highways. Turkish drivers are known for their, let’s say, enthusiastic driving, but it’s always best to stick to the speed limit to avoid any unwanted fines or accidents.

  • Towns and Built-Up Areas: 50 km/h maximum
  • Highways: 90 km/h maximum

Cappadocia Car Rental Final Thoughts

In a nutshell, renting a car in Cappadocia is the ultimate way to experience this Turkish wonderland.

From the freedom to explore hidden gems to the convenience of setting your own pace, a Cappadocia car rental is a game-changer. You’ll navigate through lunar landscapes, ancient cave dwellings, and charming villages, all while avoiding the limitations of public transport.

So what are you waiting for?
