Best Place to Stay in Hobart Tasmania

Hobart isn’t a huge city, particularly by international standards, so most of the neighbourhoods tend to be fairly close together. This might make it confusing when you’re looking for hotels in Hobart, Tasmania that suit your interests, budget, and travel style.

Luckily, Hobart is fairly easy to get around, so no matter where you end up staying, you’ll be able to see a lot. Here are some of the neighbourhoods I recommend, as well as the top sights you’ll want to visit nearby.

1. Hobart CBD

the best hotels in Hobart are in CBD
Hobart CBD

For easy proximity to everything, including the best public transport options, you can’t go past Hobart’s CBD. This is the heart of the city, home to a cluster of Hobart’s top attractions like historical museums and modern art galleries, as well as all the main transport services and best hotels. Hobart CBD is the best area to stay in Hobart for first-time visitors.

It also includes Hobart’s original settlement, the Historic Quarter, so you’ll be close to some of the most interesting history on the island as well as to the best accommodation at Hobart Tasmania, too. A visit to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery will be your best opportunity to learn about the island’s past.

From this area, you’ll be able to travel throughout the city by bus or taxi. This part of the city is also very walkable, which is one of the best ways to uncover hidden corners and cafes known only to the locals, like my favourite cafe in Hobart – Pigeon Whole Bakers.

Hobart’s CBD is the most popular shopping spot on the island and you’ll find locals and visitors exercising their credit cards in the streets. Whether you enjoy a bit of vintage shopping or prefer to spend your hard-earned cash in locally-owned boutiques, you’ll find somewhere to shop in Hobart’s CBD.

If you don’t happen to be visiting Hobart on a Saturday to enjoy the famous Salamanca farmer’s market, you can poke your head into the many artisan shops and boutique stores that open daily throughout the historical Salamanca neighbourhood.

And of course, because you’re close to the CBD as well as to the waterfront, you’ll literally be surrounded by some of Hobart’s best cafes and restaurants at all times. Battery Point, one of the best places to stay in Hobart

If you’re the type of traveller that prefers to fit in with the locals and become part of the city’s natural atmosphere, then you should think about staying in Battery Point.

A historic part of town dating back to the 19th century and one of the best places to visit in Hobart, Battery Point derives its name from the Mulgrave Battery which was placed on the point for coastal defence over the deep water Hobart Town port below. Today it’s more a neighbourhood for locals, with a few of the best hotels in Hobart dotted here and there.

This is the best neighbourhood in Hobart for couples who want to stroll through picturesque laneways and enjoy a more private atmosphere. Here you can enjoy heritage buildings and interesting shops as well as quiet, out-of-the-way cafes where you can have a peaceful meal and just enjoy each other’s company. Don’t miss out on Hampden Road in particular for great cafes as well as art and gift shops.

4. North Hobart / Midtown

BEST FOR | Millennials, Night Life, Budget Travellers

overlooking North Hobart a great budget place to stay in Hobart Tasmania
View of North Hobart from the MONA

North Hobart has always been one of the coolest neighbourhoods in Hobart, but it’s been recently regenerated to make it even more exciting! Hobart doesn’t have a lot of clubs and bars, but the few that it does have, you’ll find them in this neighbourhood. It also offers some of the best cheap hotels in Hobart, which will make your trip even more special.

If you’re eager to explore the city’s nightlife, then you’ll want to stay in this area, where you can walk home to your accommodation in North Hobart after a fun night out. North Hobart also has a collection of attractions that suit the nightlife focus of this neighbourhood, from street art to art galleries that focus on the modern.

This all might make it sound as if North Hobart was designed for tourists, but it’s actually a more local neighbourhood. After all, the young and hip of Tasmania love a good party sometimes too! This means you’ll be treated to lots of trendy international cafes and restaurants while you’re in the neighbourhood.

One potential drawback of staying in this area is the shopping. Most of the shops are locally owned and you’ll find fewer international brands and names. But if you’re the type of traveller to revel in discovering local goods, then this drawback may actually be a good thing. After all, who goes travelling to buy things they can easily get back home?

You probably also want to get to know the locals and soak in the uniquely relaxed atmosphere that Australia is famous for! And you’ll satisfy both of these goals when you stay in West Hobart.

West Hobart is a residential area that was once settled as a farming district. Today, it’s home to Hobart’s collection of creatives, which is why it’s one of the best choices for where to stay in Hobart to really dig into its culture.

This local area doesn’t have as many bars, restaurants, cafes, and shops as the other parts of the city, but it does have a few, including the popular Cascade Brewery, the longest-standing brewery in the country.

Spending 3 Days in Hobart Itinerary

Visiting Hobart is doable on a weekend and perfect for spending 3 days in Hobart on a long weekend away from Melbourne or Australia’s mainland. This will give you enough time to explore the Salamanca and waterfront areas and the charming historical Battery Point with a trip up to Mount Wellington.

Spend the next day perusing the many artistic pieces at the progressive MONA before heading back into town for a beautiful meal of Tasmanian seafood along the wharf.

For your final day in Hobart venture out on one of the epic day trips from Hobart. I recommend taking an organized day tour to Bruny Island, the gourmet haven south of Hobart. Or, for something more adventurous, board a sea vessel and explore the stark landscapes of the Tasman Peninsula on a Tasman Island Cruise.

No matter your interests, I recommend booking yourself a boutique Hobart hotel in the CBD or waterfront area for great access to Hobart’s culinary scene and transportation hub.

Where Can I Base Myself in Tasmania?

The two main cities to base yourself in Tasmania are Hobart and Launceston. If you are arriving on the island by airplane, you will likely start your Tasmania adventure in Hobart, the island’s capital. Here you will find a vibing culinary scene, cute boutique hotels in Hobart and a plethora of things to do in Hobart.

If you are arriving via the ferry from mainland Australia, you will likely base yourself in Launceston. Tasmania Travel Planning Guide

Is it safe to rent a car in Tasmania?

Absolutely, it is safe to rent a car in Tasmania. In fact, renting a car in Tasmania is the best way to see and explore the island.

You can make a very scenic lap of Tasmania in 10 days with your own rental vehicle. Plus public transportation between major tourist hubs in Tasmania is relatively limited.

What is the best way to book my Tasmania accommodation?

I always use booking.com for all of my accommodation worldwide, and Tasmania is no exception. I stayed in some really epic places on my adventure around the island.

For more cozy apartment-style accommodation try VRBO (better and safer than Airbnb).

Can you drink tap water in Tasmania?

Heck yes! Tasmania has some of the cleanest tap water in the world. Outside of a few small rural areas where this might not be the case, I really enjoyed drinking straight from the tap in Tasmania.

If you plan to do a lot of hiking in Tasmania, I recommend bringing my favourite self-filtering water bottle with you, just in case.

What are the best day tours in Tasmania?

Taking a day tour in and around Tasmania is a must when visiting the island.

I highly recommend (and have been on!) the Tasman Island Cruise, the gourmet Bruny Island day tour, the Tamar Valley wine tour and the Gordon River Cruise.
