The Arenal Volcano National Park region consists of Arenal Volcano at its centre with La Fortuna Costa Rica to its most easterly border. This, in turn, makes La Fortuna a great base for exploring the Arenal volcano region. 

Most things to do in Arenal are located outside of the town of La Fortuna, so renting a car is highly recommended, or you can opt to take a few guided day tours, which is a common way to see the area.

The most economical hotel La Fortuna Costa Rica options can be found around the centre of town, including the popular La Fortuna hostel, Selina. There are also some great cheaper La Fortuna hotel options in town for families and couples, too. 

Further afield, up the 142 Road and closer to the base of Arenal Volcano, you will find the more luxurious Arenal hotels, including Tabacon and The Springs. But, don’t fret, if you are on a budget you can also find some great eco bungalows and glamping tents among the Arenal rainforest, too, like La Tigra Rainforest Lodge.

If you are staying longer than a week, there are a few apartment-style accommodations throughout the Arenal Volcano region, including the family-run suites that I stayed in located on the quiet outskirts of La Fortuna Costa Rica.

Choosing the Best La Fortuna Hotel

When choosing the best Arenal Costa Rica hotels that suit your situation, there are a few things to consider:

Location + Distance from La Fortuna Town

This is one of the main things to consider when booking your Arenal lodging. 

Because the majority of best hotels in La Fortuna Costa Rica are located outside of town, away from amenities like ATMs and groceries, you will likely require a rental car, unless you want to rely on taxis. if you choose any of the La Fortuna hotels with hot springs located in the rainforest, I’d highly recommend a rental car to get to town and enjoy the Arenal area at its best. 

Popular La Fortuna hot springs resort properties like Tabacon are a 15-minute drive from town. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend relying on public transportation, as it’s known to be slow and inconsistent. 

I use and recommend booking your Costa Rica car rental through Discover Cars. It’s great because they compare local and international car companies to get you the cheapest price. Who can argue with that!

Property Size

If you only have 2 or 3 days in La Fortuna, consider the property size of your potential La Fortuna hotel. If the property is too large and your suite or room is located at the far edge, you could be wasting 10-15 minutes walking from your room to the main reception and car parking. I know this doesn’t sound like much, but it adds up!

Room Selection

Of course, with any hotel, you want to make sure the room arrangement suits your grouping. 

Whether you are a family with 2 small kids that don’t mind a room with 2 double beds, a few couples going on an adult vacation that want individual rooms within a suite, or newly-weds looking for a romantic stay, you may want to consider bed size, room size, and whether your Arenal hotel comes with a living room, kitchenette and small balcony. 

For those honeymooners, definitely opt for a La Fortuna or Arenal hotel that comes with a private pool or jacuzzi, ideally with views of the Arenal volcano!

On-Site Hot Springs

There are 12 hot springs located in the Arenal Volcano National Park region, with the majority of them having on-site resorts, like Baldi hot springs and Tabacon hot springs. 

Do note, that Tabacon Thermal Resort & Spa is the only La Fortuna hotel that comes with natural hot springs, meaning they don’t use any pumps or systems to circulate the water, but rather use the natural flow from the thermal river. This makes Tabacon one of the most sought-after Arenal resorts.

Other On-Site Activities

Some of the best Arenal hotels come with a few exciting on-site activities. Properties like the Arenal Observatory Lodge come with a free walking tour of the scenic property, which includes its own lake, but even better is the on-site bird sanctuary with over 500 different bird species calling it home. 

Or, volcano Arenal hotels like Lost Iguana that come with an on-site garden maze for the kiddos or The Springs with horse stables and multiple walking trails. When booking your Costa Rica volcano resort, keep this in mind!

Arenal Volcano View

Arenal Volcano is hard to miss when visiting La Fortuna and the surrounding area. Even more special when you can see it from your bedroom window. Hotel platforms like Booking.com (what I use for 90% of my travels), will specify by the room type whether your Arenal Costa Rica resort has a volcano view. I recommend making sure this is the case!

Free On-Site Parking

It’s pretty unusual for any of the best hotels in Costa Rica Arenal to come without free parking on-site, but it’s always best to make sure. Parking fees could add up really quickly. Renting a car to explore La Fortuna and Arenal is highly recommended!

What is Considered a La Fortuna Hotel?

This might seem like a bit of an unusual topic, a La Fortuna hotel is a La Fortuna hotel right? Well, where this definition comes into play, is when booking your day tours with the local companies that offer hotel pick-up. 

Bottom line is, that any hotel within the Arenal region, including hotels that are tucked in the rainforest a 15-20 minute drive outside of La Fortuna town is considered La Fortuna hotels. 

Tour operators consider anything in the Arenal Volcano National Park region, including La Fortuna town, a La Fortuna hotel. Therefore, any of the hotels near Arenal Volcano will be included in the complimentary pick-up offering.

Best Luxury La Fortuna Hotels

All luxury Arenal hotels in Costa Rica recommended in this guide will have spas (some with natural hot springs), restaurants and high-end furnishings. All are located outside of the town of La Fortuna snuggled into the Arenal rainforest, some with views of Arenal Volcano itself. 

I wouldn’t say that any luxury Arenal resort is particularly suited for children, mostly catering to couples and adults. But, there are a few that have on-site activities and amenities that can suit the whole family.

The best way to get around Costa Rica and get to La Fortuna is by rental car. I use Discover Cars because they compare local and global car companies to find you the best price.

Alternatively, you can take a direct flight from San Jose International Airport via Sansa Airlines once daily. The flight takes 30 minutes.
