Your Short Guide to Hyden, WA: The Perfect Road Trip Stop

Hyden, WA isn’t just about Wave Rock, it’s also the best stop between Esperance and Perth along a Western Australia road trip adventure. This short guide gives you everything you need before you visit.

Hyden may be small, but it packs in one of Western Australia’s most iconic natural landmarks: Wave Rock.

I stopped here overnight with my husband and mom on our way from Esperance back to Perth to return our rental car after an unforgettable two-week South West Australia road trip. It turned out to be the perfect place to stretch our legs, enjoy a bit of outback scenery, and experience a side of WA that’s a little more off the beaten track.

What makes Hyden special is its simplicity. Everything is close together. You can walk to Wave Rock, visit the nearby Lake Magic, enjoy a relaxed dinner, and catch the sunset all within a few hours. It’s quiet, unhurried, and gives you a taste of inland Western Australia before diving back into the coast.

In this guide, I’ll share the best things to do in Hyden, where to stay (including our experience at Wave Rock Resort), where to eat, and practical tips for first-time visitors.

If you’re road-tripping between Esperance and Perth, Hyden is a stop you’ll be glad you made.

What to Do in Hyden, WA

Hyden’s biggest draw is Wave Rock, a massive granite formation shaped like a curling ocean wave. Standing 15 metres high and stretching 110 metres long, it’s especially striking at sunrise or sunset when the light brings out its earthy tones.

A short walk away is Hippo’s Yawn, a cave-like rock formation perfect for quick photos, and the Wave Rock Walk Trail, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding bushland.

Lake Magic (a nearby salt lake) glows beautifully at golden hour and is a peaceful spot to relax.

If you have a little extra time, Mulka’s Cave features ancient Indigenous rock art and adds a cultural layer to the visit. Everything is within easy driving distance, so you can see it all in half a day.

Where to Stay in Hyden

Wave Rock Resort (Lake Magic) is where we stayed overnight, and it couldn’t have been more convenient. The resort is just a short walk from Wave Rock and overlooks Lake Magic, making it easy to catch both sunrise and sunset. It’s quiet, comfortable, and ideal if you want to be close to nature.

Other good options include Wave Rock Motel, located in town with simple but comfortable rooms and an on-site restaurant, and Hyden Star Tourist Park, a great pick for campers or those travelling in a van.

All three are close to the main attractions, making Hyden an easy overnight stop.

Where to Eat in Hyden

Hyden is small, but there are a few solid spots to grab a bite.

For breakfast or a light lunch, Bush Bakehouse Café serves good coffee, pastries, and sandwiches, perfect before or after visiting Wave Rock.

Wave Rock Café, located right near the attraction, offers casual meals and is convenient if you want to eat without heading back into town.

If you’re staying overnight, the Motel Restaurant is your best bet for dinner. The menu is simple and hearty, and it’s an easy walk if you’re at the motel. Since options are limited, it’s smart to plan your meals around their opening hours.

Tips for First-Time Visitors

Visiting early morning or late afternoon is the best way to see Wave Rock.

Both for the beautiful light and fewer crowds. Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the rock formations and trails have uneven surfaces, and bring water and snacks (that can be purchased at the Hyden IGA), since Hyden is small and services can be limited outside of town hours.

If you’re driving between Esperance and Perth, Hyden makes a great overnight stop, and you can comfortably see all the main sights in half a day.

It’s wise to fill up your WA road trip car hire with fuel before leaving, as the next stations can be far apart.
