Thinking About Staying at Earth Lodge, Guatemala? Read This First
Wondering what it is like to stay at Earth Lodge in Antigua, Guatemala? This honest hotel review of my personal experience will help you decide whether to stay or skip.

Earth Lodge isn’t your typical Antigua accommodation, and that’s exactly why so many travellers are curious about it.
Perched in the hills just outside the city, it promises volcano views, jungle immersion, and a slower, more intentional way of travelling. But with that comes a lot of questions: Is it comfortable? Is it hard to get to? And is it actually worth staying outside Antigua proper?
I stayed at Earth Lodge for two nights over Christmas with my husband, booking the Cabaña Volcán Premium Room, and experienced the lodge during one of its busiest and most festive times of year.
From arranging private transport through their responsive online customer service, to enjoying every meal on-site, to unwinding in the Temazcal sauna, I was able to see Earth Lodge at its best, and understand where it might not be for everyone.
This review is based entirely on my firsthand stay, not a quick visit or secondhand impressions. I’ll walk you through what Earth Lodge does exceptionally well, what to realistically expect, and who this unique jungle retreat is truly best suited for, so you can book with confidence, not guesswork.

What Makes Earth Lodge So Different From Anywhere Else Near Antigua
Earth Lodge isn’t trying to compete with boutique hotels in Antigua’s city centre, it’s offering something completely different. Set high in the hills, this eco-lodge leans fully into nature, community, and unplugging from everyday noise.

What struck me immediately was how intentional everything felt, from the layout of the cabins to the way people naturally gather in the common areas at sunset. The views alone are unreal – sweeping volcano vistas (of all three volcanoes!) that change constantly with the light and weather.
We even witnessed an epic lightning storm at sunset while Fuego was erupting.

Absolutely awe-inspiring. A top experience in Antigua, for sure.
What really sets Earth Lodge apart is its intentional use of local ingredients and environments. Expect housemade macadamia nut butter, ceremonial cacao and honey from the local community. Tours of the local fincas and nearby hikes are also offered.

Where this beautiful place shines is in its spiritual offerings: yoga, shamanic rituals, Temazcal sauna and wellness packages.
There’s also a strong social element here that you don’t get at standard hotels. Even as a couple, it felt easy to connect with others without being forced.
Earth Lodge works because it embraces what it is: rustic, thoughtful, and deeply connected to its surroundings rather than polished or luxurious.
Location & Arrival: What Staying “Outside Antigua” Really Feels Like
While it looks close on a map, the journey is very much part of the experience. The road is steep, winding, and bumpy (nowhere near as bad as the roads to Lake Atitlan, though) and not somewhere you want to navigate on your own, especially after dark, even though it is only 20 minutes out of town.
We arranged private transport (thanks, Jose!) directly through Earth Lodge’s online customer service (WhatsApp), which I highly recommend. It was smooth, reliable, and removed all stress from arrival and departure.

Once you arrive, though, the reward is immediate: cooler air, total quiet, and those expansive volcano views.
Staying here feels intentionally removed from the city, which is exactly the point. You’re trading convenience for atmosphere, and if you’re okay with that, the location is a huge part of Earth Lodge’s magic.
Rooms & Accommodation: Staying in the Cabaña Volcán Premium Room
We stayed in the Cabaña Volcán Premium Room, and I’d wholeheartedly recommend it if you’re visiting as a couple or want more privacy and comfort. The cabin felt rustic but thoughtfully designed: comfortable double beds and a layout that made the most of the views.

Waking up to volcanoes right outside our windows was genuinely special and never got old. The staff said that the Cabana Volcan had the best views on the entire property, so do with that what you will.

For me, the premium cabins strike the best balance Earth Lodge offers. You still get the jungle experience, but with enough comfort to truly relax after a day of hiking, lounging, or sauna time.
Other options include dorm-style cabins, unique dome rooms and single bed cabins.

Views, Common Areas & the Overall Atmosphere
The common areas at Earth Lodge are where the place really comes alive.

Everything is designed to pull you outward: open decks, hammocks, communal picnic tables, and unobstructed volcano views in nearly every direction. Mornings felt slow and quiet, with people journaling, birding or sipping coffee (which rivals some of Antigua’s best coffee shops), while afternoons naturally drifted into conversations and sunset watching.

Evenings were cozy and social without feeling loud or chaotic. I loved that it was easy to participate or opt out depending on my mood. As a couple, we never felt like the social vibe was intrusive, but it also didn’t feel isolating.
Food & Drinks: Worth Staying On-Site For Every Meal
I was genuinely impressed by the food at Earth Lodge, to the point where we happily ate every meal on-site without feeling like we were missing out on some of my favourite cafes and restaurants in Antigua. The menu is thoughtful, well executed, and exactly what you want after a day of fresh air and slow living.

The quality of the meals far exceeded what I expected for a remote eco-lodge. Over Christmas, the food especially shone. Breakfasts were hearty and satisfying, dinners felt like a proper sit-down experience, and drinks at sunset were an easy highlight.

You can’t really go wrong with anything on the menu, but my husband and I really enjoyed the macadamia nut pancakes, breakfast tacos, and omelette, along with their spectacular golden milk latte with housemade macadamia nut milk.
On-Site Experiences: Temazcal, Slow Moments & a Magical Christmas Eve
One of the highlights of our stay was the one-hour Temazcal sauna session, which we booked on-site. It was deeply relaxing and grounding, the kind of experience that forces you to slow down and fully disconnect. They provide towels and water with mint and eucalyptus oil for heating up the sauna. It was so lovely!

Paired with the cool mountain air afterward, it felt incredibly restorative.
Because we stayed over Christmas, we also joined Earth Lodge’s Christmas Eve event, and it was genuinely special. The evening included a beautiful smorgasbord of cheeses, meats, dips and veggies to share, a classic three-course meal, marshmallows roasted over an open fire, and then (the real magic) sweeping views of fireworks lighting up Antigua at midnight from below.
One of the best experiences in my recent years.
The Downsides: Things to Know Before You Book
As magical as Earth Lodge is, it’s not for everyone, and knowing that upfront is important.
The terrain is steep, with lots of stairs and uneven paths, so it’s not ideal if you have mobility issues or struggle with hills. Because it’s a jungle setting, bugs are part of the deal, especially in the evenings, and you’ll hear nature all night long.

This isn’t a place for air-conditioning, TVs, or room service, and Wi-Fi can be spotty (only really available at the main lodge). You’re also committing to staying on-site once you arrive, which means less flexibility than a city hotel.
None of these were dealbreakers for me (especially since we stayed in Antigua proper for 3 weeks), but they’re realities that will shape whether you love Earth Lodge or not.
Who Earth Lodge Is (and Isn’t) For
Earth Lodge is perfect for travellers who value experiences over polish, like couples, nature lovers, hikers, and anyone craving a digital detox with big views. I did notice that the guests happened to be in the 30+ age range, and not your typical backpacker crowd.
It works especially well as a reset at the start or end of an Antigua trip, filled with organized day tours or as a base before or after volcano hikes. If you enjoy communal meals, slow mornings, and being immersed in nature, you’ll thrive here.
On the flip side, if you want luxury finishes, easy city access, or the ability to pop out for dinner whenever you feel like it, this likely isn’t your place.

Tips for First-Time Guests
A little planning goes a long way here. I strongly recommend arranging private transport through Earth Lodge, as it removes all stress and is well worth the cost.
Pack layers for cool evenings, sturdy shoes for walking around the property, and insect repellent.
If you’re booking as a couple, the Cabaña Volcán Premium Room is absolutely worth the upgrade for privacy and views. Two nights felt perfect for us: long enough to unwind without feeling disconnected.
If you’re visiting during a holiday, keep an eye out for special events, as their Christmas programming added real value to our stay.
Final Verdict: Would I Stay at Earth Lodge Again?
Yes, without hesitation.
Earth Lodge delivered exactly what it promises: immersion in nature, thoughtful experiences, and a genuine sense of calm just outside Antigua.
Staying here over Christmas made it even more special, but even without the festivities, the views, food, and atmosphere would have made it memorable. It’s not a place I’d stay for a full week, but as a two-night retreat woven into an Antigua itinerary, it’s exceptional.
If you’re the kind of traveller who appreciates intention, scenery, and slowing down, Earth Lodge is absolutely worth booking, and likely one of those stays you’ll talk about long after you’ve left Guatemala.
I also have to give a shout-out to the warm and welcoming staff at Earth Lodge, as they really rounded out the experience.
