Popoyo may be a small surf town on Nicaragua’s Pacific coast, but its food scene seriously surprised me.

During my weeklong stay on the beach in late November, I made it my mission to try all the top cafés and restaurants in the area. From breezy beachfront bars to healthy brunch spots, wood-fired pizza joints, and local taquerias buzzing with surfers. With dirt roads, salty air, and a laid-back surf culture, Popoyo isn’t flashy, but it delivers some incredibly tasty food that perfectly fits the coastal vibe.

Because Popoyo is spread across two distinct areas: Playa Popoyo (South) and Playa Guasacate (North), knowing where to eat can make your trip smoother.

Some of the best meals I had were tucked into boutique hotels, beach shacks, or tiny cafés hidden off the main road. And since I personally visited every restaurant on this list, I can tell you exactly what to order, what the atmosphere is really like, and who each spot is best suited for.

This guide covers the tastiest cafés and restaurants in Popoyo, whether you’re craving big breakfasts before surfing, fresh seafood at sunset, Asian-inspired comfort food, or a quick taco fix between sessions.

Consider this your go-to list for eating well in one of Nicaragua’s most relaxed surf towns.

Kooks Café is the ultimate pre-surf breakfast and brunch spot while visiting Popoyo. A bright, laid-back café known for hearty bowls, great coffee, and fresh, flavourful plates that hit the spot after a morning on the waves.

I ordered the ricotta toast piled with roasted tomatoes and pesto (honestly, one of my favourite breakfasts in Popoyo) and a dirty chai latte, which became my go-to caffeine fix for the week. My husband loved the mango smoothie bowl, which was thick, refreshing, and topped with homemade granola.

Kooks Cafe is connected to the trendy Waves & Wifi resort and is best for surfers, remote workers, and anyone craving wholesome fuel to start their day right.

Kooks Cafe rivals The Garden Cafe in Granada for my favourite cafe on my Nicaragua travel itinerary.

2. Oasis Bar and Dining

Oasis Bar and Dining is one of Popoyo’s most beautiful dinner spots, set inside the one of the most stylish Popoyo boutique hotels called Hide and Seek Resort with soft lighting, ocean breezes, and a refined-but-relaxed atmosphere.

The menu leans toward fresh, coastal flavours with an elevated take on Nicaraguan and Asian-fusion cuisine.

I ordered the grilled fish tacos, which were tender, flavorful, and perfectly paired with a local ginger kombucha that I’m still dreaming about. My husband went for the green papaya curry with chicken, a fragrant, rich bowl layered with spice and freshness.

Oasis is the restaurant attached to the boutique Hide and Seek Resort and is best for couples, foodies, and travellers wanting a romantic or polished dinner in Popoyo.

Taberna 99 is one of Popoyo’s best spots for a stylish, elevated dinner. The kind of place where you linger longer than planned because the atmosphere is just that good.

With its open-air design, ocean views, and creative international menu, it’s perfect for a nicer night out after a day in the sun. We both ordered the penne vodka pesto pasta with prawns, and it was exceptional: creamy, aromatic, and generous with perfectly cooked seafood.

Since the restaurant is located at the 99 Surf Lodge’s infinity pool, expect to see people lounging in the pool with sundowners, enjoying the sunset.

The flavours were bold without being heavy, making it a standout meal from our week staying in Popoyo. Taberna 99 is ideal for couples, groups, and anyone craving a refined yet relaxed dining experience.

4. Magnific Rock Cafe

Perched dramatically on the cliffs overlooking Popoyo’s coastline, Magnific Rock Café is all about the views, easily some of the best in the region.

It’s a go-to spot for casual breakfasts, coffee, and sunset drinks, especially if you want a panoramic vantage point over Beginner’s Bay surf break below. The café’s menu leans simple and satisfying, with classics like smoothie bowls, wraps, and fresh juices.

We stopped here for a relaxed bite and to take in the lookout, and it was the perfect slow moment between beach sessions. Magnific Rock Café is ideal for travellers who want great views, chill vibes, and a scenic break from the sun.

5. Dutchy’s Deli

Dutchy’s Deli is the perfect grab-and-go spot in Popoyo when you’re craving something fresh, quick, and homemade. This cozy little deli serves some of the best sandwiches, baked goods, and snack bites in the area, which is ideal for beach days, surf breaks, or stocking up before a moto adventure.

With friendly service and consistently good food, Dutchy’s is great for travellers who want something convenient but still high-quality.

6. The Salty Koala

The Salty Koala – a great spot for sunset cocktails

The Salty Koala is one of Popoyo’s most beloved spots for Asian-inspired comfort food, great after a long day in the sun. The menu blends Indian, Vietnamese, and Southeast Asian influences, making it a refreshing break from the typical beach fare.

We shared the beef madras curry with naan, the Vietnamese salad with lemongrass chicken, and the chicken satay. After spending a lot of time travelling in Asia, the flavours weren’t as bold as we would have liked, but might suit someone who doesn’t tolerate spice well.

I still recommend enjoying some time at The Salty Koala at sunset with a cocktail in hand. The hammocks and lounge seating are comfy. The beachfront, open-air setting and warm staff make it even better.

7. Todo Con Amor Farm Café

Todo Con Amor Farm Café is a wholesome, earth-friendly café tucked away on a peaceful stretch away from the Popoyo beach in the town of La Virgen Morena, offering homemade baked goods and simple farm-to-table brunch plates. The cafe is also connected to a youth centre and pump track.

We stopped in and grabbed a cheesecake pastry and a banana chocolate loaf, both incredibly fresh and flavourful, perfect for taking on the road or enjoying on the beach. This café is ideal for slow travellers, breakfast lovers, and anyone wanting a nourishing, homemade snack with a rustic, countryside vibe.

With friendly staff, quick service, and a come-as-you-are vibe, it’s ideal for surfers, backpackers, and anyone needing a reliable, no-fuss meal between beach adventures.

Portions are generous, the chimichurri is fresh and vibrant, and the open-air setting gives it that relaxed, beachy Popoyo feel. You’ll find menu items like empanadas, sandwiches and delicious desserts.

If you love grilled meats and rustic Latin American cooking, ChimiChurri will quickly become a favourite.

10. Viento Este Pizza

Viento Este Pizza is Popoyo’s go-to spot for wood-fired pies, and after one bite, you’ll understand why. The pizzas come out with perfectly blistered crusts, gooey cheese, and fresh toppings. It’s simple, rustic, and exactly what you want after a long beach day.

The outdoor seating on the beach gives it a relaxed, communal vibe, often filled with surfers swapping stories over cold beers and shared slices. It’s the kind of place where you order “just one more” because it’s that good.

Viento Este is best for groups, couples, and anyone craving a satisfying carb fix in a chilled-out setting.
