Where to Stay in Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul is Europe’s largest city with a population of approximately 15.5 million residents. The city itself is split by the Bosphorus Strait which acts as a natural border separating the continents of Asia and Europe. As such, one part of this great city lies in Europe, while the other lies in Asia

The city is further split up into 39 districts, 25 of which lie on the European side while the remaining 14 lie on the Asian side. Each district or neighbourhood offers its own set of unique attractions, history, charm, and vibe.

Sultanahmet

However, one of the best neighbourhoods for first-time visitors to Istanbul has to be Sultanahmet. This is because this area of Istanbul has some of the city’s top historical attractions, as well as some of the best places to stay in Istanbul.

I’ve stayed in two glorious boutique hotels in Istanbul’s Sultanahmet district

Hotel Miniature – Ottoman Mansion and Boutique Saint Sophia Hotel. I can highly recommend both of these hotels for their central location close to Istanbul’s top attractions, their delicious complimentary breakfasts and their friendly staff.

The famous Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Hippodrome, and Topkapi Palace can all be found here along with plenty of other attractions.

Galata

Those that want a taste of Istanbul’s nightlife and contemporary art and culture scene will enjoy living in the neighbourhood of Galata.

Featuring some of the city’s best 19th and 20th-century European architecture the neighbourhood is home to plenty of art galleries, exquisite restaurants, and lively bars and clubs.

Karakoy

One of the fastest developing and coolest neighbourhoods in Istanbul is Karakoy. This happening harborside area of Istanbul connects the traditional with the modern in perfect harmony.

Here, you will find some of the coolest coffee cafes, the best Istanbul street food, and some of the best boutique hotels anywhere in the city.

Taksim

For those of you that love shopping, Taksim Square is hands down the best neighbourhood to stay in Istanbul. Situated in the European half of the city, Taksim is the heart of modern Istanbul and an area that is always alive with bristling energy.

It is famed for its many world-famous restaurants, shops, and hotels and historical attractions such as the Republic Monument and the Taksim Square Mosque.
